Anti-data center activity: Here’s Tara Jaramillo’s letter to us about why we should write to the NM Legislative Finance Committee. We need to email them and ask them not to let Tech build this data center. Emails at end of letter:

“Is AI here to stay? Probably. But that does not mean every community must accept massive data center development.

New Mexico is under increasing pressure to move toward “clean energy” and reduce dependence on oil and gas revenue. That shift is likely part of why large-scale data centers are being promoted across the state.

Unfortunately, I believe NMT — as a state institution — may have been caught up in a broader state-driven push for economic diversification without fully weighing the level of community concern and pushback these projects are creating. This idea was not created in a vacuum and would not be moving forward if NMT did not believe they had support from the State.

This is not about opposing innovation or economic growth. It is about responsible planning, transparency, and making sure New Mexico communities are not ignored in the process. Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, and residents deserve honest conversations about the long-term impacts before decisions are made behind closed doors.

It is imperative that Santa Fe hears from you. Decisions will likely be made long before the legislative session begins in January.

The Legislative Finance Committee meets year-round, not just during the legislative session. Summer and fall meetings are often where priorities, funding assumptions, and political momentum are built before January bills are finalized. That makes early constituent outreach strategically important.

Do not underestimate your power in Santa Fe — but also understand that lobbyists, industry groups, and unions have already been hard at work convincing state leaders that New Mexico “needs” these projects.

That is why each of us must start reaching out now to our House and Senate members — especially the State Legislative Finance Committee this summer — to make sure they understand that many New Mexicans do not want our state turned into a testing ground for the AI and data center industry. Community consent, transparency, and full accountability should have been the first consideration, not the afterthought.

Please also remember: constructive and respectful communication leads to better outcomes. Our voices are strongest when we remain informed, professional, and united in advocating for our communities. The general email for the New Mexico Legislative Finance Committee is:

Dear Mr. Mukkamala,

I’m a Socorro resident and adjunct faculty at Tech. I don’t want a data center or huge solar array erected in Socorro County. I’ve heard the facts, and I don’t need any more facts or monthly meetings or explanations from Green Data or Jason Bak. The environmental damage would be irreparable, and the city and county don’t stand to benefit from this project.

Please help nix this dangerous idea.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Christie Smith

Hi everyone,
Get ready for something truly special! This coming Saturday, March 28th, is shaping up to be a monumental day for people all across the nation. Thousands of us are planning to gather for what we’re calling ‘No Kings’ rallies, marches, and peaceful protests. It’s our chance to come together and collectively make our voices heard.
This whole movement is about standing up for our constitutional rights – especially that awesome First Amendment that lets us speak our minds and gather peacefully. We’re uniting to push back against some of the federal government actions that many of us feel are just plain wrong or unfair. We really want to see more accountability, better transparency, and a solid commitment to the democratic principles that our country is built on.
And guess what? We’re not alone in this! A huge coalition of over 200 diverse organizations are throwing their full support behind these efforts. We’re talking about incredible groups like the ACLU, the 50501 Movement, the League of Conservation Voters, Public Citizen, and the Human Rights Campaign. Plus, powerful unions such as the American Federation of Teachers and SEIU, and awesome grassroots movements like Indivisible, are all actively mobilizing their communities. Their collective involvement really highlights how many people care about this, and how strong our unified call for change truly is.
Just to be super clear, this isn’t some big, top-down operation. It’s completely grassroots – powered by everyday folks like you and me who genuinely believe in what we’re doing. Everyone participating is motivated by their deeply held convictions and a desire to help create a more just and fair society. So, if you hear any rumors that protesters are getting paid to be there, that’s absolutely false and totally misses the genuine, passionate spirit of this vital democratic expression.
If you feel strongly about standing up for justice and our fundamental rights, we’d truly love for you to join us on March 28th. Even just being there, peacefully, can make a huge difference and help amplify our collective demand for meaningful change. We will be on California and  Walstreet at noon.
Hope to see you there!
Best,
Cricket Courtney (ai assisted)

PRE-PRIMARY CONVENTION

Pursuant to the DPNM Chair’s official CALL for the DPNM State Pre-Primary
Convention,
I am now issuing the official CALL to the Democratic Party of Socorro County
2026 Pre-Primary Convention and to the Ward Elections of Convention Delegates.

supplemental county-party rules, and conducting other business pertaining to
the county party.

be called to order at 9:30 am on February 7 at 200 5th Street, Socorro, NM
87801 (formerly the DAV).

The electors (voters) at the county convention will be all convention attendees

Registration of convention electors and other attendees will open at 8:30 am at
the county convention location.

Our next meeting is this Saturday, August 2nd, at 9 AM at the Capitol bar. Here’s a link to the agenda for the meeting, and here’s a link to last month’s meeting minutes.

In other news, I’ll be finishing my Master of Science in Applied and Industrial Mathematics at New Mexico Tech this fall and spring. Once the fall semester begins on the 19th, I’ll need someone to take over as Secretary because I will have significantly less time to dedicate to the role.

Per our bylaws, the Secretary records and archives meeting minutes for our monthly meetings, executive committee meetings, and county conventions. If you can take on that responsibility , I encourage you to volunteer.

Listed in the graphic above are all of the responsibilities I’ve been handling as Secretary (not including maintaining and updating the WordPress website). The responsibilities beyond meeting minutes may require the formation of a multi-person communications committee to be fully covered. I am willing to train as many people as it takes to replace me.
